Over the last few years, the historic Wesley Centre on Saville Street in Malton has been undergoing an historic transformation into a 600-seater classical music and events venue and prominent community hub.

Whilst working on the project, the architects and builders have found historic artefacts embedded in floorboards and walls, including a 1902 opera programme.

This sparked an idea to engage with the local primary school children to take part in a time capsule project.

A time capsule is simply a collection of letters, drawings, objects etc. that capture the way we live, our values, what we believe or aspire to - with the intention of future generations opening the capsule to get a glimpse of the times we live in now.

Our hope is that local children will take part in this exciting project and submit their objects and letters along the theme ‘Messages to the Future,’ with a deadline for submissions by Monday 6th November, 2023.

We will create a public display of all the artefacts submitted (hosted within the Wesley Centre entrance) during November 2023.

Judges will then choose ten items to be put into the time capsule, alongside that day’s edition of the Malton Gazette, a Yorkshire Post, and a Yorkshire flag.

We plan to bury the time capsule with a civic ceremony and media launch on the 20th November, 2023.

It will be buried under a prominent floor plaque, “Messages to the future, buried on 20 November, 2023, by the local primary school children of Malton. To be opened by the children of Malton on 20 November, 2123.”

Children can be as creative as they want! They could write poems, draw a picture, or create artwork, or record a song.

All submissions to the time capsule project need to be sent for the attention of Paul Emberley Saville St, Malton YO17 7LL by 6th November 2023.
