Weddings

The Wesley Centre is the perfect place to hold your wedding, combining more than 200 years of history to help create an unforgettable day.

As you gather among family and friends to celebrate and begin a new life together, the Wesley Centre’s unique and historical character offers a powerful reminder of precious links to the past. Whether you’d like a spectacular wedding for up to 150 or an intimate reception, the Wesley Centre can offer you a first class service and a magnificent setting for your very special occasion.

Using the minstrels gallery for your ceremony

With the backdrop of the historic Forster & Andrews pipe organ and it’s richly decorated pipework soaring to the ceiling of the Wesley Centre, your marriage ceremony can be held on the minstrel’s gallery. Your guests can witness the wedding ceremony from the spectacular vantage point of the large main gallery of the Wesley Centre (seating up to 300).  After the ceremony, your guests can assemble on the ground floor for the reception and wedding breakfast.

  • The Wesley Centre will have a capacity for up to 150 guests for a wedding ceremony, plus a seated dinner and dance for everyone on the ground floor of the main space
  • Alternatively, there's also capacity for up to 300 guests so they can each feel part of your wedding ceremony, and afterwards for a drinks reception and buffet on the large ground floor space

We’re assembling a portfolio of some of the finest caterers, florists and production specialists in the business. All of our suppliers will be approved to work in the on-site facilities of the Wesley Centre and will help you to deliver an unforgettable experience for your guests.

Would you just like to use the Wesley Centre for your marriage ceremony?

As an historic Methodist Church since 1811, you can still of course choose to use the Wesley Centre for your marriage ceremony; it could be the perfect place for you.

The unique ‘cubic’ amphitheatre form of our beautiful building could just be the setting for your wedding. Churches are special places and there are some things about a Church wedding that you just can’t find anywhere else.  If you’d simply like a more intimate wedding ceremony in a unique setting, our ground floor can seat any number up to 250 guests. For larger events, you can use our historic gallery as well, accommodating up to another 300 people.

Music traditionally plays an important role in a wedding. The Wesley Centre will have one of the finest pipe organs in North and East Yorkshire to complement your ceremony, before, during and after the marriage ceremony itself – and we can source your professional organist or other musicians to help make that special day much more memorable.

But a Church is so much more than simply a venue for your wedding. Unique and special things become part of your marriage, on the day itself and beyond:

  • A Church wedding will add a spiritual dimension to your marriage. The ceremony includes God and looks to him for help and guidance. God’s blessing is the main attraction for many couples, whatever their beliefs.
  • You can make amazing vows, or promises, in a church. You can only make vows this big in a Church. These vows, made in public, will help you to stay together and grow together. God and your Church are there for you to help you keep your vows.
  • The Minister has a very particular role to play in your wedding. They can blend ancient tradition and modern experience to reflect your story. Because of the relationship with the Minister, your wedding can be made personal, memorable, meaningful and beautiful.
  • Church buildings such as the Wesley Centre offer outstanding beauty. Our Grade II* listed historic building is considered by Historic England to be of national importance, and it’s one of just 42 such Grade II* listed Methodist Churches in Britain.
  • The Wesley Centre offers centuries of history. Imagine all the couples who have married in your local church, some of whom may well be your family. You can feel you’re becoming part of history itself, the bigger plan, by marrying in the same place as your relatives. We know these sorts of connections can make your day even more special.
  • You can be involved in making choices about your ceremony. For some people, a Church simply seems like the proper place to get married. Churches can be described as ‘peaceful’, ‘serene’, or having an atmosphere that makes marrying there a particularly special experience.
